Speaking up early and truthfully is a vital strategy in a fast-moving crisis

"Speaking up early and truthfully is a vital strategy in a fast-moving crisis." Professor Amy C. Edmondson

COVID19 is proving to be a bigger test of the world's psychological well-being than physical health. The way people are reacting should not surprise us. What we are seeing is primal and instinctive behaviour at its best. When under threat ☠️ the part of our brain that controls higher thinking and rationality gets overridden by the much more primitive emotional centre of the brain. Daniel Goleman calls this phenomenon an 'amygdala hijack', i.e. an emotional response that is immediate, overwhelming, and out of measure with the actual stimulus. Edmondson's quote above reveals one key strategy to restore order in our brains in times of crisis. This is not the time to shut down. This is the time to open up, talk more, focus on the facts and find the best path forward, especially if you are in a position of authority. For more from Amy click here: https://lnkd.in/fPbd5N5
