I debated sharing this quote from Sharma as at first passing it may sound like he's encouraging us to be selfish. I then remembered Wharton Professor Adam Grant's research in his book 'Give & Take'. It showed that out of three groups - givers, takers or matchers - givers turned out to be the worst performers. Who were the highest performers I hear you ask? Givers! Huh? It turns out that how we give counts. High performing givers know how to give without giving up time to focus on their most important tasks, according to Grant. It's important to strike an equilibrium between giving freely and giving to ourselves. Your life's work depends on it!
