"Are you having a Bolt moment?" Despite being the greatest sprinter of all time Bolt clearly struggled when changing to football.
His dream was to play for ManU. He ended up playing with the Central Coast Mariners... for only 8 weeks.
To achieve high performance is a combination of many variables but two are particularly key - mind frame & context, i.e. how & what you think & how you interact with the environment around you.
Bolt's mind frame would have largely been the same but his context had greatly changed.
Many companies are having a Bolt moment. Their context has changed & their performance is suffering. Bolt chose to change his context. Many companies don't get this choice and fail to recognise that their old game is no longer.
Too many organisations are still putting on their sprinting spikes and lining up for the 100m when the sport has changed entirely.
NY angel investor David Rose sums it up dramatically saying “Any company designed for success in the 20th century is doomed to failure in the 21st.” Some truth to this for sure. The good news is that does not have to be the case if leaders are more aware of their mind frames & context.
